Resolution To Lose Weight-Again covers perpetual diet most of us are on, gain six months, lose six months, year in and year out. We compare the diet and exercise options against the goal of a healthy life.

Resolution To Lose Weight-Again

Another New Year and another opportunity to make a resolution for our health.  Here I am, looking in the mirror and having my scale yell, "Will one of you get off of me?"  I must have lost and gained 200 pounds in the last 5 years, the same 15 pounds at a time.  We know this is extremely unhealthy but do it anyway.  This year, we'll make the resolution with more emphasis and...resolve...like the 15 years I resolved to quit smoking, until I finally did.  If Spring means, for you, getting the winter pounds off in time for the summer pool, maybe it's time we both looked at a longer term solution that could add a much longer term to our lives.

Weight Loss Diet:

This is probably the method of choice to shed all those holiday pounds, and there are always a lot to choose from.  It really doesn't matter which one you choose as long as your doctor agrees with your choice.  I like the G'zin G'zout Diet.  You know, the one where you make sure less G'zin than G'zout.  That's usually accomplished through an exercise called Push-Backs, done 3 times a day.  At least that's what my skinny friends told me.  Now, of course, we know everybody burns calories at different rates, so, if you're like me, you can eat as little as your skinny friend and still gain weight.  Struggling with a diet half the year every year causes our bodies to never lock into a system...it's always feast or famine.   Our systems suffer the stress of having to stow the extra and the stress of having to go get it during the famine months.  All this added stress weakens our system and causes it to fight us at every turn.

Fitness Exercise Workouts:

These are always a good idea to tone and strengthen and to burn more calories.  If losing weight is the goal, though, exercise is a more difficult way to do that.  That's because fat weighs less than muscle, so, as you add muscle from exercise, your weight can actually go up.  Also, the more you exercise, the bigger your appetite, the harder it is to stay on a weight loss diet.  Now, if health, as opposed to weight loss, is your goal, exercise is extremely healthy stuff to be doing.

Healthy Life-vs-The Weight Roller Coaster:

This is where we'll make a departure from our annual resolution to lose weight to a far more realistic and beneficial goal of a healthy life.  The annual weight loss roller-coaster is so difficult, stressful and unhealthy, let's scrap it in favor of a permanent lifestyle.  Instead of living in feast and famine, we can choose a healthy, balanced diet, including fats, proteins, carbohydrates, fiber and water, with lots of fruits and vegetables.  Yes, it's harder to learn about all this stuff and build it into our diets, but the work only has to be done once, as opposed to our annual diet struggles of the past.  One good thing about this approach is the fact that it isn't all or nothing...you can phase it in one little change at a time, until you're eating right for your weight, metabolism and lifestyle, then you never have to go through the stress of changing it again.  Exercise, then, doesn't work against your program, it works with it, because health is the goal, not some arbitrary weight or clothing size.  So, maybe your resolution this year can be to never have another resolution to lose weight.  That's where I'm aiming!

If you're looking to improve your health and fitness, you probably want a healthy life...including mind, body and spirit.  You can renew your mind and spirit with God's help.  He can heal the stuff your diet doesn't control.  If you want His help, go to Healing From God.
