Glucosamine is used by the body to produce cartilage.  Long promoted as a natural dietary supplement by veterinarians to relieve joint pain in animals, and by natural food suppliers for human use, it's now gaining acceptance in the medical profession.  Glucosamine supplements are generally produced from shellfish.  Usually taken with another cartilage derivative, Chondroitin

People allergic to shellfish should not use Glucosamine.  It is less toxic than anti-inflammatory drugs commonly used for joint pain.  Since Glucosamine interferes with blood sugar tolerance, anyone with Diabetes should use only under doctor supervision.  

Foods High In Glucosamine:

Livers, kidneys, animal cartilage and shellfish have the highest concentrations.

Supplements Of Glucosamine:

No daily recommended amount has been set, but clinical trials suggest 500 mg, 3 times a day may effectively relieve joint pain due to osteoarthritis.
