Melatonin is an antioxidant manufactured in the brain. It has been found useful as a sleep aid, to ease jet lag and relieve stress. It may have preventative and curative effects on cancer and Parkinsons.
Melatonin is not an essential nutrient and has no associated deficiency symptoms.
Essentially non-toxic. Some reports of sleepiness (duh) and headaches have been associated with Melatonin supplementation. Insufficient information available about long-term side effects or interaction with most medicines. Do not use with MAOI's because it may cause overdose (see your doctor).
Because it's manufactured in the brain, foods made from brains may have some level of Melatonin. Rice and other plants contain some Melatonin.
Contrary to our normal cautions, we recommend you avoid natural Melatonin supplements (from animal sources) due to risk of contamination. Synthetic melatonin supplements are readily available. No recommended amounts have been established for daily use. Please consult your doctor before taking Melatonin supplements, particularly if you're taking prescription medicine.
