Lutein is used by the body as an Antioxidant and particularly in the eye to color and shade the retina. Lutein is showing promise when tested for the treatment of Macular Degeneration and Cataracts and may be useful in treating Hardened Arteries.
No deficiency symptoms have been associated with Lutein.
Natural Lutein in food sources is non-toxic with no side effects. No studies of long-term safety of concentrated Lutein as a supplement.
Dark vegetables, like spinach, kale, peas, leeks and various greens, along with tomatoes are the best sources. Actually, Marigold petals contain a lot of Lutein...but not recommended as a food.
No recommended amounts have been set, but 2-6 mg daily should be enough to ensure adequate supply in your body with minimal risk. Make sure the supplement is from natural plant concentrates, rather than synthesized chemicals. Natural plant concentrates are safer and usually include Zeaxanthin. Please consult a doctor if you're considering Lutein supplements for a medical condition, a child, or if you're pregnant or lactating.
