Omega 3's are nutrient oils (EPA & DHA) used by the body to control inflammation, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, build nerve and brain cells, reduce risk of heart disease, regulate blood sugar, reduce artery damage and fight tumors and cancer.
People with a deficiency of Omega 3 oils, may be increasing the severity and risk for Migraines, arthritis, allergies, ulcers, colitis, lupus, asthma, high blood pressure, blood clots, diabetes and cancer.
Excessive repeating. Excessive amounts added to the diet may prevent normal blood clotting.
All foods have some Omega 3, but cold water fish have the largest concentrations. These include salmon, sardines, tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and sablefish.
Because of the clear health benefits, supplements are available in most stores even though there are no daily recommended amounts. A great way to supplement is to increase the amount of salmon and trout in your diet to 3-4 meals per week. If you buy an Omega 3 supplement, make sure the source is a reputable company that does not use fish livers (too high in bad cholesterol). Typical soft gel supplement contains 180 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA in a fish oil concentrate. DO NOT CHEW! You won't like the flavor. You can take 1-3 of these a day, before meals.
Always discontinue 1 week before surgery or childbirth to allow faster blood clotting.
Note: I take one soft gel before breakfast and one before dinner. Because it breaks down oils, I take about 600 mg Lecithin at the same time I take my Omega 3. This helps my digestion and helps prevent the repeating common to Omega 3. Glen
