Diabetes is caused by the body not processing carbohydrates properly. Type I Diabetes usually is diagnosed during childhood and is a permanent condition caused by the body not producing enough insulin. Gestational Diabetes is caused by the hormone imbalances during pregnancy. Type II Diabetes can occur at any age (usually adult) and is caused primarily by long term overload of carbohydrates, making the body less responsive to insulin. Though the diseases are similar, our focus will be on Type II Diabetes because it's the most common, preventable and treatable. It's often called the Affluence Disease because only in rich countries with many food choices has Type II Diabetes reached such epidemic proportions. In the US, Diabetes is the number one cause of Renal Failure, a major cause of Atherosclerosis, stroke and heart attack, and one of the 3 leading causes of death.
Diabetes signs and symptoms include, excessive thirst, excessive urination, intense hunger, fatigue, recurring blurred vision, weight gain particularly around the waist, vaginal yeast infections, slow healing.
Type I Diabetes requires insulin and frequent blood glucose monitoring to maintain life and prevent serious complications. While many medicines are available for Type II Diabetes, talk to your doctor about managing with diet, nutrition, exercise and blood glucose monitoring. The better you do controlling glucose naturally, the slower the disease will progress. As the disease progresses, more medicine, then insulin will be needed. If blood glucose remains out of control, stroke, blindness, renal failure and infections requiring amputation of fingers, toes, legs and other extremities may occur.
Note: After being diagnosed with Type II Diabetes in 2000, I thought about giving up. Instead, I got very serious about my health, lost 50 pounds and began regular aerobic exercise. Since then, I founded EHF, a non-profit corporation, built 3 successful websites, bought 20 acres and built my own home (doing much labor personally). This disease forced me to make changes that have greatly improved my life. Glen

Start to lose any extra weight you have...a drop of just 5% in your weight can make a huge difference in your energy and blood glucose level. Add regular aerobic exercise program 3-5 days per week to help your body process carbohydrates. Change your eating habits to include 3 small meals and 3 in-between meal snacks to keep your blood glucose more level and keep from getting hungry.
