Emphysema is a very serious lung disease where lung tissue hardens and deteriorates, gradually lessening your ability to breathe. The number one cause of Emphysema is smoking. Other causes include infections, air pollution, lung surgery, genes and aging.
Signs of the early stage of Emphysema
include coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing.
Middle stage symptoms include the above, plus difficult breathing, weakness,
limited physical ability and frequent respiratory infections.
In the final stage, all of the above intensifies plus loss of appetite and
weight loss, inability to perform simple physical activity, inability to get out
of bed, and death.
Most often, emphysema isn't detected until the late middle stage. Treatments often include heavy regular doses of steroid drugs that ease breathing, but cause long term physical and emotional damage. 24-hour Oxygen supplementation is also a common treatment. These things are unpleasant and unsightly, but they prolong your life.
If you're a smoker you can significantly improve your breathing, lengthen your life, and reduce the amount of medicine and oxygen you need if you just quit smoking. If you quit during the early stage of Emphysema, your body has a great chance to reverse the damage. If you've been diagnosed during the late middle stage, there's still a lot you can do to ease the symptoms and have a longer, more productive life.
Examples: My mother and sister both died with Emphysema after smoking most of their lives. My mother was diagnosed at age 62, quit smoking, lost weight, watched her nutrition, started exercising and lived 18 more years, 15 of which were happy and productive, though she had to take her medicine and use oxygen 24 hours per day. My sister was diagnosed at age 58, quit smoking, quit working, didn't diet or exercise, gained weight and died at 62.
There is a lot you can do...if you're willing! To reduce your demand for oxygen, lose any extra weight you have. To improve how your body uses oxygen, begin an aerobic exercise program and very slowly increase the length and intensity. To get oxygen from sources other than your lungs, make a daily habit of drinking 2-3 quarts of clean water. To help your body fight disease and to overcome deficiencies caused by medical drugs, follow a low fat diet supplemented with natural Multi-Vitamins and Multi-Minerals, along with extra doses of the following:
Antioxidants; including
Beta Carotene,
Flavonoids,
Vitamin A,
Zinc,
